Forbe’s just released their list of the most powerful women in the world and the one thing it demonstrates is that we’re making a difference socially and culturally. Women of different cultures, ethnicities and sexual orientation dominated the top 10 spots. Yes, these women may have “earned” their spot on this list because of their massive salaries, but for most of them, it’s not about the money, it’s about how they are re-shaping the world and the way we think.
Michelle Obama – clearly this is a first lady who is a mom first and is passionate about keeping our kids healthy. She recognizes that obesity has become an issue of epidemic proportions for our families and is working hard to make our schools healthier places.
Lady Gaga – Whatever you think of her, she has definitely made an impact on the music industry and society in general. She consistently pushes the envelope on what we consider fashion and art. The most important lesson she’s teaching our kids is to express yourself, be yourself and don’t succumb to pressure. In this age of low self-esteem and bullying, she is a great example of how you can become successful and stay true to who you are.
Indra Nooya – While she might not be a household name, most people’s homes are stocked with her companies products. As the Chief Executive of PepsiCo, she continues to keep her brand top of mind for consumers. Perhaps most importantly, she recognizes the importance of social media and the need for large corporations to give back. She has started the Pepsi Refresh project, a program that allows people and organizations to submit ideas on how they can make a difference in the world and then provides grants between $5,000.00 and $250,000. to the winners. Additionally, the program also allocates $1.3 million each month for a U.S. project, such as the recent “Do Good For the Gulf,” which offers stipends to build a shelter for animals whose owners lost their homes to the oil spill and to provide mental health services and job training. What better way to show our kids the importance of paying it forward?
