I must admit that up until this week I never really followed the show “The Biggest Loser” or really knew who Jillian Michaels was. But now I do. Clearly she is a person with serious issues – low self esteem and delusions of grandeur to start with.
I guess we all should feel honored that Jillian agreed to share her “wisdom” with all of us mere mortals in this month’s issue of Women’s Health. She’s quoted as saying that she’ll never get pregnant. “I’m going to adopt. I can’t handle doing that to my body,” Michaels told the new issue of Women’s Health magazine. “Also, when you rescue something, it’s like rescuing a part of yourself.”
OK, let’s forget for a moment that she referred to adopting a child as rescuing “something.” Is she really trying to say that her appearance is more important than having a child? That’s definitely her right, but what does that say about her priorities and what she would teach a child about healthy self-esteem? What if she adopted a child that struggled with a thyroid condition? Would she chastise this child or try to give them back?
Then, let’s talk about her other choice comment – that she wouldn’t be caught dead in Spandex over 40. Hmmm, is she trying to say that once you’re over 40 you might as well just accept that fact that you are not going to have a beautiful body? I think Faith Hill, Marsha Cross and Halle Berry all prove that’s not true.
Then there’s her quote about how she plans on starting a talk show when Oprah retires and considers herself to be the next Oprah. Really Jillian? Do you really think that many people care about what you have to say? Perhaps that’s the reason she made such idiotic comments – so that more people would actually know who she is.
Whatever the reason, I’m sure most people will realize that having a perfect body is not what being healthy is all about and certainly not what being happy is all about. The incredible joy I felt the days my children were born far “outweigh” the pride of having what she might consider a perfect body. What a shame she’ll never know that.
