We Need to Support RIF and Keep Books in Kid’s Hands, By Alison Rhodes, The Safety Mom

I’ve always believed that books open up a child’s imagination. A national non-profit that gives millions of books to children throughout the country is up in arms over the President’s proposed budget cuts. They’re calling on educators and families to help lend their support with their online email campaign to congress.

President Obama’s 2011 proposed budget cuts Reading is Fundamental – a longtime kids’ program that provides free books in hundreds of U.S communities. RIF receives 80% of its funding from the government.

Currently, the organization is rallying parents, educators and the community with a ‘write your politician campaign’ on the internet – already thousands have offered their support. You just go to www.rif.org and sign your name – that’s it!

Without federal funding, more than 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs.
