Without a doubt, one of the greatest problems facing our children is childhood obesity. Childhood obesity rates in the United States have tripled over the past three decades, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. Health experts blame obesity for a range of medical conditions, among them heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and asthma.
Today, Michelle Obama launched her campaign to fight obesity and has the support not only of the White House but food industry executives, who have pledged to reduce the amount of sugar in school lunches, and beverage makers who promise to more clearly label their sugary drinks. The Let’s Move campaign is an ambitious initiative whose goal is to eliminate childhood obesity within a generation. Clearly, this will not be an easy task and it will definitely take the cooperation of many organizations and industries.
I’m so excited that Mrs. Obama has taken this on as her project and, as parents, we need to support her and set an example for our kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics will now encourage its doctors to measure body mass index for patients. Do you know what yours is? Unfortunately it’s oftentimes easy to make poor choices when it comes to snacks and meals. When we’re on the go and running around the most convenient food is not always the healthiest. Let’s support Mrs. Obama in her effort and make a pledge to try and eliminate one unhealthy snack from our family’s meals and get some exercise every day.
