On Sunday researchers from Duke University unveiled the results of a new study that offers hope to kids with peanut allergies. In an experimental treatment doctors, in a controlled setting, gave 33 kids tiny amount of peanut protein in the form of powder sprinkled onto applesauce and other food. Over the course of 8-10 months they were given increased amounts of the peanut protein. Six months into the study they were actually ingesting 13 – 15 peanuts before having a reaction.
Now, 2 1/2 years later, 5 of the children can eat unlimited amounts of peanuts without having any sort of reaction. This is great news for the thousands of parents who are in constant fear that their child will come in contact with a food cross-contaminated with peanuts and have a potentially life-threatening reaction.
But – parents take note!!! Do not try this at home!! These tests were done within a controlled environment by a doctor.
Unfortunately the peanut butter industry has gotten a black eye recently with all of the peanut recalls. Parents need to be aware that peanut butter is not only safe but a great source of protein for kids without peanut allergies. And now, with promising signs from this study, kids who had previously never gotten to enjoy a peanut butter and jelly sandwich might actually be able to enjoy one in the future!
